President Barack Obama yesterday kick-started the two-day Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, as over 250 delegates from nearly 60 countries – including a number of our Global Entrepreneurship Week hosts from around the world gathered in Washington D.C. The summit is the realisation of a pledge dating back to Obama’s speech in Cairo last summer – in which the President laid out his vision for a period of greater cooperation and understanding between the Islamic world and the US – and aims to strengthen entrepreneurial and social links between the cultures.
President Obama used his
speech to hail the “
the rich tapestry of the world’s great traditions and cultures”, and drew upon his own experience as a community organiser in Chicago to underline the importance of social entrepreneurship, asserting that “
real change comes from the grass roots and the passions of single individuals serving their communities”.
Jonathan Ortmans from The Kauffman Foundation, co-founders of
Global Entrepreneurship Week, was also on hand to welcome delegates last night at a busy reception including our partners in Egypt, Jordan, Malaysia, Paraguay ,Tunisia and Turkey… who will all be flying the
Global Entrepreneurship Week flag!
