Goole College Students Make Their Mark With a Spark

A group of ten engineering students from Goole College are utilising their metalwork skills and producing flower pot holder sculptures, wall baskets and bird feeders. It was a pleasure to meet the students who all demonstrated great pride and passion in their work. The students have been able to incorporate some of the time they have spent welding and painting their products as part of their college portfolio contributing to their qualification.

The students have used a wide range of free marketing opportunities; including a stall at the college Money Week event where they have secured an order for hanging baskets at a local bank. The bird feeders are also displayed at a local pet shop on the high street which has generated business within the community. I feel that team work has been key to the team’s success; ensuring that each member has had a role, a voice and has been able to contribute.

Jamie Thrower said: “We’re really enjoying tenner month. It’s great that we can get involved in this campaign and still develop our practical skills. Team work has been really important to us; we’ve all got stuck in, developing samples for displays and to demonstrate the quality of our work through to managing orders and keeping an eye on our finance. Best of all orders are flooding in and we’re definitely set to make a profit.”

Louise Waude Skills for Life Learning Advisor from Goole College said: “It’s great to see our students enjoy learning so much about starting and running a business. They really are talented individuals – I’ve put my order in and can’t wait to install my unique piece of art into my garden!”

The enterprise is looking to continue after tenner month and is supporting a local initiative ‘Goole in Bloom’ where the products will be used to display flowers throughout the town. In addition to putting money back into the enterprise the team plan to spend some of the profits on a rewarding group social activity such as an afternoon paint balling.
