Charley Mellowship is one of our most enthusiastic supporters of all things Make Your Mark. She’s written an article for the SSAT magazine which has kindly shared with us first…

This year at Heath Park Business and Enterprise College over 500 students are taking part in Make Your Mark with a Tenner, a national competition which challenges young people to be creative with a ten pound note.  Students are encouraged to not only make a profit from their ten pound, but to also help out their local community.  This year the entire Key Stage 3 cohort and all year 9 Business students are taking part.

Due to the large number of participants, Heath Park was this year nominated as one of the national launch schools for the challenge.  Oli Barrett, co-founder of the competition, came to the school to talk to the Year 8 cohort, some of which took part last year.  At the launch, students were also treated to guest speakers such as Emma Mendez, a local entrepreneur who turned her talents into the profit-making organisation ‘Anybody Can Sing’.

Not only was there a high profile launch, but students also took part in filming the launch DVD which has gone out nationally on the Make Your Mark website.  Chloe Hamilton, a Year 10 student interviewed last years Tenner winners – a group of Year 8 car washers!  Bobby Banks, from the car wash team also interviewed Oli, asking him all about the competition.  The video is available online

Students are well under way this year, having prepared their ideas early in order to maximise selling time!  Businesses which are currently trading include Easter activities and raffles, a football tournament, Mothers Day gifts – including planting bulbs and tea and coffee delivery services.
Groups are also arranging events such as a teacher’s blind date and a dance off competition!

March looks set to be a busy month at Heath Park!

Working with our local Primary schools:

As we are one of the national launch schools for Make Your Mark with a Tenne, we decided to loan out some of our tenners to our local Primary schools!  Students went along to Whitgreave Junior and Wood End Junior school in order to launch the competition and hand out tenners to groups of Year 5 and 6 students.  They came up with some fantastic ideas including making their own film and screening it to other students and parents!

Good luck to all the creative students at Whitgreave and Wood End!
