Sunshine Stats
February 24th, 2010 by Alex_GoldupNew research from boffins at accountancy and advisory outfit RSM Tenon show the recession has not managed to squeeze all optimism out of our entrepreneurs.
According to the stats, forty per cent of small business owners plan to expand their business over the next twelve months – a figure that compares very favourably with the eighteen per cent that expressed the same intention six months ago.
It’s not all sugar, spice and all things nice for entrepreneurs. Anaemic recovery stats appeared to disappoint a number of people last month, and the FT reported earlier this month that streamlined businesses that slimmed-down during the recession are now struggling to cope with the upswing in business.
With different stats and pronouncements flying around, it’s interesting to compare how differently optimism and pessimism are treated by the media. There’s nothing particularly unique or insightful about observing that bad news sells, but it does appear to be the case that, even as the outlook for enterprising folk starts to improve, the press continue to focus on the gloomier side of things. Good news – such as the stats above – get relegated to a corner in one paper.
Here’s hoping that, as enterprise and entrepreneurship pick up, that our Fleet Street opinion-formers begin to let a little more sunshine into their pages.
