Who is Britain’s next top role model?

May 29th, 2009 by vanessa_b

We all look up to someone to get our inspiration but the question is do our young people have the right people to look up to?

Role models are incredibly important providing positive examples for young people to follow, helping them to understand that whatever life throws at you, you can accomplish your dreams. They provide direction for many helping them to realise their true potential and more importantly to believe in them self.

Anyone one can be a role model but is society creating a place whereby young people only learn to emulate what they see? Dreaming of being that celebrity, with a spotlight and a mic on TV whereby it’s easy to underestimate the hard work involved getting to that stage in their life. The glamour makes it so attractive that’s where young people aspire to be but there are many people that are making a real difference to society.

The teens that took part in Make Your Mark with a Tenner are incredible examples of being a role model for peers overcoming hurdles, challenging stereotypes and making a real difference. Isn’t it time that we made more of a big deal in the media to highlight the marvellous talents of real young people.

Who is your top role model?

I think that the media dont neccessarily frame celebs are role modles, we do- wrongly. I think there just needs to be clarfication. celebs are celebs, many if not most are not in it to be role models for young people. some of them can be good role models, others not. But there also needs to be more appropriate forums for REAL role models to be seen, heard and celebrated.

Baroness Amos (Valerie Amos) is one of the most inspiring women in society today.
She is the first Black Woman to sit in the cabinet, has served in the House of Lords and was appointed Secretary of State for international Development. As a young woman in England, she is someone who reminds me to press on with what i dream to achieve in my life and make them a reality.

In all honesty, i can’t think of anyone in Britain who i condsider a role model outside of my own home. It’s sad but true- perhaps it can be blamed on my own ignorance regarding the influential and inspirational members of this society. Perhaps i’m lucky and don’t need to look past my own front door to be inspired, or just maybe, it’s simply because the only influential people made visible, are uneducated entertainers and crooked politicians.

Children should look at their parents as role models, not scantily clad singer and idiotic footballers.
