New kid on the ‘Blog’
May 7th, 2009 by phil_cHi all, my name is Phil Crowshaw and I am one of those weird folk, people call an Entrepreneur. I run a business called Experts Business Solutions (www.expertsbusinesssolutions.com) but I am probably best known as the founder of online business TV web site www.expertsonline.tv , which I started in 2004.
All sorts of stuff runs through your mind when writing a blog. What style should I write it in? How controversial should I be? How real should I be? Who will be reading it? (if anybody). What will people be interested in?…the list goes on. I soon realised that you can analyse it to death so I will write what pops into my head based on my insights and experience in business and let you decide if it’s any good…or not.
So, to get the ball rolling here are my thoughts on a critical area of Entrepreneurship – Motivation.
Every successful celebrity or specialist I have worked with or interviewed for www.expertsonline.tv has displayed a high level of motivation for the product or service they provide or their area of interest.
Another word for motivation is ‘Passion’. Think about anything you have ever achieved in your life that you were proud of and I can guarantee that you had enough motivation to do what it took to achieve it.
In life there are two types of motivation that we all experience, AWAY FROM and TOWARDS motivation. AWAY FROM motivation is where you want to get away from something that is painful to you emotionally or physically, whereas TOWARDS motivation is something you really want more of.
The interesting thing here is that despite what people think, most Entrepreneurs are not driven and motivated by having a Ferrari or 50 bedroom mansion. It is usually an away from motivation such as fear of failing, losing freedom or fear of poverty that drives them. This was very clear when interviewing Simon Woodroffe, the millionaire Founder of YO! Sushi for expertsonline.tv. Simon said that his definition of success was not being in the position of having NO money.
Another example was the interview we did with comedian Stan Boardman. He recalls the time in his early career when he would drive 200 miles to do a gig for a small fee, but he did it because before that he worked outside through all weathers and the thought of being that cold again drove him to avoid it at all costs. He said ‘At the end of the day, it was a long drive but I was WARM inside that car’. This is a good example of an away from motivation.
Your motivation can change many times throughout your life for different reasons. However you can quickly assess the likelihood of you achieving anything you set out to do by asking yourself one question.
On a scale of one to ten how strong is my motivation to do what it takes to do this?
If you think it is less than 5, you may need to consider whether you want the outcome badly enough. If you answer 9 or even 10 you can be sure that at least you have a high motivation, which is absolutely key to moving on with the task.
Until next time.
May the force be with you.
Phil Crowshaw
