Best ambassadors to buy Christmas pressies from?
December 10th, 2008 by jonathanThis weekend I made one of our ambassadors a whole £1.45 richer. My first ambassador purchase (that I am aware of) and it was brilliant! This got me thinking, if I’m looking for an original, innovative christmas present, where better than the masters of entrepreneurship supporting Make Your Mark.
So, if anyone has suggestions on where to buy presents for; Dad (mid 50s, hates football, loves gadgets), Mum (late 50s – yes my dad is technically a toy boy but I don’t want to think about that, very arty, likes soaps from what I can gather), Sister (at Uni, likes art and fashion) and Brother (a couple of years older than me, no more mature) – I’d be over the moon (extra brownie points if these purchases mean I don’t have to go near oxford street in the next couple of weeks).
Please feel to post questions for presents for your own family members. I have a few younger cousins who I could buy presents for, but I think that an impeding recession is a just cause to join the scrooges of this world.

For your mum try the new Booker Prize winner ‘White Tiger’ by Aravind Adiga (www.themanbookerprize.com/news/stories/1146) all about entrepreneurship in India. A gripping story about a boy who works his way out of poverty despite all the family, social, political barriers, in addition to about any other barrier you can think off. All about necessity entrepreneurship, enterprise in the illegal sense of the word and Bangalore techn. start-ups.
For your sis, try the wonderfully entreprenuerial designer-makers at incubation arts centre Cockpit Arts in Holborn (see http://www.cockpitarts.com) I went to one of their events during Enterprise Week and heard some amazing stories from entrepreneurs in the Creative Arts, including that of one of the founders of Tatty Devine! And saw some very arty clothes, lamps and other lovely thingies.
For your Dad, get the latest books on how to set up a thriving business empire: either Richard Branson’s ‘Lets Do It’ or James Caan’s ‘The Real Deal: My Story from Brick Lane to the Dragons’ Den). If your Dad gets excited and starts his own gagdet company, you might stand to inherit some of it!
And for your bro, give him a personalised ‘Make Your Mark with a Tenner’ type challenge(see http://www.makeyourmark.org.uk/get_involved). Give him a few quid and a brief setting out that he must find an enterprising way to make a profit with the money, and do something with social/environmental impact.
What do you reck?

Give them each a Christmas Card with a tenner in it and tell them to use it to set up a business that has an economic and social impact.
Then at Easter, ask for the tenner back (perhaps with interest if they’ve been particularly successful?)
They might think this is a bit stingy but you can let them know that not only have you improved their entrepreneurial capability (a priceless gift for anyone), your research also shows that the fact that they’ve been charged for it will make them feel better about it all.
