Hundreds go bananas at Hereward College Challenge
November 17th, 2008 by carolineOver 200 students at Hereward College in Coventry got their teeth into bananas – and this year’s Make Your Mark Challenge. The students all attend the college which takes in 16-19 year olds from both the surrounding city area and countrywide. All Hereward students have some kind of physical disability, so to have the paralympic values as part of the challenge was particularly relevant and poignant.
The day was started off by Make Your Mark ambassador Emma Mendez who runs Anyone can Sing. She had all the students fired up ready for the challenge by speaking about her personal battle to get through formal education and set up her business. The students loved her can do attitude and many were eager to talk to her about their musical aspirations.
The local daily newspaper came along to feature the event and to do a follow up article with 6 students through a vox pop about their dream business.
Some great ideas came out of the challenge with one group of students opting to create wristbands with each of the olympic values on them, while another set wanted to produce sweets reflecting the Olympic values – with a humbug reflecting diversity!
Thank you to Peggy Finch at the college for an awesome feat of organisation and for inviting us to be part of a wonderful day.
