How to turn it on

November 14th, 2007 by Jo Hill

I went to a consultation event today where the government were asking young entrepreneurs their views on business support and how to create the right environment to enable people to start and grow businesses. There was a lively discussion and one person asked a very good question – they said
“If there are two switches
– one switch to become an employee
– one switch to become an entrepreneur
the first switch gets pressed all the time for young people, by teachers and parents. How can we turn on the other switch so that young people see entrepreneurship as a real and viable career option?”

There were a range of responses in the room including:
- privatising personal development and career services at schools
- more access to mentoring from local business people for students
- better access to work placements in entrepreneurial organisations
- setting up enterprise clubs in schools – just like drama or sports clubs.
